Dynamic cans are using a moving coil driver. A moving coil driver only means that there is a magnet in the headphone, which generates a static magnetic field. A voice coil attached to a diaphragm is placed in the magnetic field and a current is conducted through the voice coil which makes it cause the diaphragm to vibrate and produce sound waves. Most dynamic headphones need little power in order for it to work. For this reason, nearly all headphones on the market are dynamic headset. These are used by ordinary music listeners, musicians and professional studio mixers alike. Since little electricity is necessary to drive them, the majority of them will work with mobile devices and computers without needing a headphone amp. Orthodynamic / Isodynamic headphones
Orthodynamic headphones were quite popular worldwide in the 1970s. They are considered by some to be old technology but have a revival today. Orthodynamic headphones have flat and larger voice coils, which protect the diaphragm. It follows that the present is better spread to the diaphragm, which in turn creates sound waves. Bigger voice coils mean larger diaphragms even larger than electrostatic headphones which mean that more power is required to drive them. Pros of orthodynamic headphones are that they provide excellent response and sound quality like that of an electrostatic.
Electrostatic cans have drivers, which don’t have a voice coil. The diaphragm is rather charged with power. The diaphragm is placed in between two electrically charged metal plate electrodes, which can be perforated. When the diaphragm vibrates, air is forced through the perforated metal plates making a sound wave. Electrostatic cans are often more expensive than dynamic headphones, and are relatively uncommon. Because of the diaphragm and two metal plates, which are required to be charged with power, the cans require a big quantity of power to drive. The sum is so much that regular amps that drive lively and/or orthodynamic headphones. To put it differently, higher clarity and sound quality is produced.
